Design Lead

The Design Lead is responsible for leading all design across projects, clients and industries. The Design lead is a thought leader and a passionate advocate of user needs based design, design thinking, and service design.

Role Description:

  • Cover all areas of design including user experience design, user interface design, content design, and visual design
  • Work with the UR&D Practice Lead to define develop and lead an innovative and delivery focused design process across projects, clients and industries
  • Be involved in projects from discovery through design, development, test, release and measurement
  • Lead, motivate and develop a team of designers
  • Ensure standards of quality are maintained within the design team
  • Go beyond the requirements of the creative brief and be willing to challenge assumptions
  • Ensure the delivery of designs that meet web standards and follow design principles and guidelines
  • Support and provide best practice design guidance to other designers
  • Communicate credibly to a wide range of digital delivery disciplines
  • Comply with all confidentiality and non-disclosure policies and/or agreements and ensures security of information at all times

Required Experience:

  • Significant experience in a relevant role either agency or client side
  • A portfolio you’re proud of that demonstrates strong UI and visual design skills, showing end-to-end experience of the design delivery process
  • Experience leading a design team
  • Evidence of creating and working to brand guidelines, but also willing to innovate on and challenge these
  • Significant experience in communicating good design to non-designers
  • Significant experience in web and mobile application interface and interaction design
  • Significant experience in large commercial agile projects
  • Significant experience in designing and managing the design of successful digital products

Skills:

The following are required skills:

  • Expert understanding of design concepts, information architecture, interaction design, content design, visual design, and prototyping
  • Expert in Adobe CS
  • Ability to use appropriate technologies (e.g. HTML, CSS, javascript, jQuery, wireframing tools) to produce deliverables
  • Sound awareness of business and project constraints as they apply to design
  • Highly capable of effective prioritisation of tasks and personal time management
  • Highly capable of understanding customer requirements and user needs and producing deliverables that reflect that understanding
  • A sound understanding of Agile delivery methodology

The following are desirable skills:

  • Sound awareness of business and project constraints as they apply to the design of digital products and services
  • Experience of working in a full service digital agency environment
  • Experience working in Government or Financial Services sectors
  • Active participant in communities of interest
  • Thought leader in design, design thinking, or service design
  • Degree in Interaction Design, Product Design, Industrial Design, Graphic Design, or related field

Kainos is a professional services organisation with clients spread across the globe and we deliver projects both from client site, and from our offices. While we will attempt to base you on projects near or at your contracted office location, you need to be willing to travel to client sites and spend time away during the week if it is required.
